Transgender Golfer Still Faces Barriers

Seems kind of dumb as women can play on the men's PGA tour events, but I would hardly expect golf to be on the cutting edge of breaking down sensitive social issues.

Hiking the PCT, tip-to-tip

Group of guys are hiking the Pacific Coast Trail this summer Mexico border to Canada and blogging (w/ some drop-dead gorgeous photos) along the way. One of the guys (Pete) has a satellite phone that he's uses to connect his laptop online with to blog and post photos.

http://www.pct2005.com/

And here's another guy (Rob - who looks WAY too much like Jason Lee, the actor) in the party who is posting just photos. http://www.pbase.com/carcinomad/pct

Reminds me of "A Walk in the Woods" by Bill Bryson, only more techy and these guys look like they will succeed vs. Bill's attempt to walk the entire Appalachian Trail.

Plenty of reading. Kind of sucks you in. Almost makes me want to mail him cookies at one of his designated mail stops.

Fitness and Technology

Guilty. Although I havn't strapped on a heart monitor in years (too much chaffing)

The Oracle of Nokia

"The phones were part of a Ph.D. project by MIT Media Lab researcher Nathan Eagle, who handed out the devices as a way to document the lives of students and employees of MIT, ranging from first-year undergrads and MBA students to Media Lab employees and professors.

Eagle's Reality Mining project logged 350,000 hours of data over nine months about the location, proximity, activity and communication of volunteers, and was quickly able to guess whether two people were friends or just co-workers. It also found that MBA students actually do spend $45,000 a year to build monster Rolodexes, and that first-year college students -- even those who attend MIT"

Big Yuan - Much Ado About Nothing

China's decision to float the yuan is really a yawn. It does nothing to solve the longer-term issue of China having a price advantage currency-wise. Probably gets John Snow some brownie-points with some lobbyists though.

OK - So what? Well, purveyors of big, expensive goods (Catepillar, etc.) catch a small break and mass importers like Wal-Mart may take a hit to their margins as I doubt they will raise prices to off-set the foreign exchange flucuations.

Also, it will be interesting to see how, if at all, this affects the bond markets as China is one of the U.S.'s largest buyers of Treasuries (e.g., Creditor). We've seen before how slight disruptions in the Asia currency markets can really spook the dollar traders as well as the bond guys - which means higher interest rates in the forms of mortgage and other reail bank borrowing rates.

A running commentary from the "former couch" on the set of "The Daily Show". Clever. Very clever.

See also the Slate piece "Talk Show Feng Shui" on the Daily Show's set change and of course you'll need a T-Shirt or coffee mug to protest against this travesty.

Rogers has words for cameraman at booking

What the hell is wrong with this guy? Was he traumatized with video cameras as a kid? Was he kicked out of some type sports camera journalism summer camp and now he vows revenge against all who try to gather footage of him?

Dude, you are a public figure/sports celebrity. An All-Star basesball pitcher. If you want to be left alone (and be careful what you wish for asshat) then friggin' retire and go live in the woods and write a manifesto railing against the video camera and turn over your millions to a charity. Get a grip son, you're losing it.

Poulter's Pants

See what Ian Poulter won't be wearing this week at the British Open.

To see what he will be wearing, you'll have to wait until 7:58 am CDT when he's set to tee-off on Thursday. He and Daren Clarke have become quite the golf dandys with regards to clothing choices. Actually, most of the European players' clothing choices are pretty bold compared to their US counterparts. Where's Johnny Miller's plaid pants and white belt when you need them??

The Impeachment Question

"More than four in 10 Americans, according to a recent Zogby poll, say that if President Bush did not tell the truth about his reasons for going to war with Iraq, Congress should consider holding him accountable through impeachment."

As much as I would like to see Bush get bouned back to ranch in Crawford, I fear we'd be heading down a slippery slope with the use of "impeachment". I see impeachment as the "nuclear option" to borrow a phrase from our current Senate environment. We tried corrective action back in Novemeber - it was called an "election", and it almost worked. Just my $.02 though....
